Mostar & Blagaj — the Bridge & the Spring

Two rivers give Mostar and Blagaj their shape. The Neretva runs beneath the Old Bridge; at Blagaj, the Buna rises at the foot of a limestone cliff. Together they offer two ways of seeing Herzegovina, through its towns and through its water.

1. The bridge

   In Mostar, the Old Bridge draws the eye across the Neretva. The river, the stone and the streets around it belong to the same view.

2. The spring

   At Blagaj, the dervish house stands beside the Buna beneath the cliff. The scale changes: from a city around a bridge to a place gathered around the source of a river.

3. The landscape

   Water and limestone connect the two places. This is the setting of The Water Road, with time to notice the towns and the land between them.
